Bragan I is the first painting in a series of three exploring the atmosphere and character of Bragan Bog, County Monaghan.
The series began during a solitary visit to the bog, where I was immediately struck by its eerie, otherworldly atmosphere. There was a stillness and mystery to the landscape that felt almost mystical, and I wanted to capture that feeling rather than simply record the place itself.
This painting was started en plein air, allowing me to respond directly to the changing light, colour and energy of the landscape, before being completed in the studio. The vibrant colour and expressive marks reflect the sense of life and mystery I experienced in this wild and atmospheric place.
