Radiant Rossmore was painted en plein air in Rossmore Forest Park during spring, capturing one of those bright, changeable days when the landscape seems to come alive with colour.
The rolling drumlin landscape, still water and newly emerging greens are brought together with expressive brushwork and layers of colour, from soft spring greens and deep woodland tones to flashes of blue, rose and warm ochre in the sky and reflections. I wanted to capture not just the view, but the feeling of being there on a spring day, surrounded by the familiar landscape of Rossmore.
If you've walked the trails around Rossmore, you may recognise this view, with the distinctive Roddy den Drum overlooking the landscape. It is one of those places that feels instantly familiar to so many local people, making this painting a little piece of Rossmore to bring home.
Painted directly from observation outdoors, the painting holds onto the energy and spontaneity of the day it was created. The changing light, movement of the water and shifting colours of the landscape are all part of the painting.
The original oil painting is presented in a custom-made white floating box frame, giving the artwork a clean, contemporary finish while allowing the painted edges of the canvas to remain visible.
