Winter Rising in Rossmore
An original oil painting created en plein air on Rossmore Hill in Co. Monaghan, capturing the landscape at the very end of winter, just before the first signs of spring.
Painted in the early morning, the work looks towards the area where Rossmore Castle once stood. The low winter sun was casting long, dramatic shadows from the tall trees across the frosty ground, creating strong lines and movement through the composition.
Working directly from the landscape, I had a very short window to capture the shadows before the rising sun changed the scene. That immediacy is an important part of the painting. It holds onto a particular moment of light, atmosphere and place that could only have existed for those few minutes that morning.
The finished work is moody and atmospheric, but with a strong sense of colour and light. It is very much about the feeling of being there on a cold, bright morning, rather than simply documenting the landscape.
Rossmore is a landscape I return to regularly, and painting it outdoors allows me to build a collection of works connected to the place through different seasons, weather and light. This piece would sit beautifully within a collection of Irish landscape painting, or as a statement piece in a home.
